Comprehensive Eye Exams

A complete vision and eye-health assessment using advanced digital diagnostics.

A comprehensive eye exam is the foundation of long-term vision health. Beyond checking how clearly you see, we evaluate the internal and external structures of the eye, screen for diseases that often start without symptoms, and update your prescription if needed. Most adult patients should have a comprehensive exam every one to two years; children, contact-lens wearers, and patients with diabetes or a family history of eye disease should be seen annually.

Who it's for

  • Adults due for a routine vision check or prescription update
  • Anyone experiencing blurred vision, headaches, eye strain, or vision changes
  • Children before school and at recommended intervals afterward
  • Patients with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration

What's included

  • Visual acuity testing (the chart with letters)
  • Refraction to determine your exact glasses prescription
  • Eye pressure measurement to screen for glaucoma
  • Slit-lamp evaluation of the front of the eye
  • Dilated or undilated fundus exam to evaluate the retina and optic nerve
  • Digital retinal imaging (when indicated)
  • Discussion of findings and next steps

What to Expect

  1. 1

The exam takes 30–45 minutes for most patients.

  2. 2

Bring your current glasses, contacts, a list of medications, and your insurance card.

  3. 3

You may receive eye drops to dilate your pupils; vision is often blurry for 2–4 hours afterward, so consider bringing sunglasses or a driver.

  4. 4

You walk out with a clear prescription and an understanding of your eye health.

Why this matters

Many sight-threatening conditions — glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, early macular degeneration — have no symptoms in their early stages. A comprehensive exam catches them while they're still treatable. It also gives you the most accurate prescription, which means clearer vision and less eye strain.
