How Vision vs Medical Insurance Works at an Eye Exam

Most patients have two kinds of insurance that may apply to an eye exam, and which one we bill depends on why you're being seen.

Vision insurance

Vision plans (VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, Spectera, etc.) cover routine annual or biannual eye exams + an allowance toward glasses or contact lenses. If you're coming in for a routine prescription update, this is the policy we run.

Medical insurance

Medical plans (Blue Cross, UnitedHealthcare, Medicare, etc.) cover eye exams that have a medical reason — diabetic eye exams, exams for chronic eye conditions (glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye), exams to investigate symptoms (sudden vision changes, eye pain, floaters). If you have diabetes or a known eye-health condition, we typically run your medical insurance instead of (or alongside) your vision insurance.

What if I have both?

Many patients have both. We'll choose the right one based on the reason for your visit. For example: a diabetic patient coming in for an annual diabetic eye exam → medical insurance. The same patient coming back next week to update their glasses prescription → vision insurance.

What if I have neither?

Self-pay pricing is straightforward and transparent. Comprehensive eye exams are typically $80–$200 depending on the location and what's involved. Specialty exams (contact lens fittings, diabetic exams) may add a small additional fee. We give you exact pricing before you schedule — call your nearest location for a self-pay quote.
